The trip down

Once the sun set, now we had to drive that same 37 mile winding switchback road back down -- but in the dark! They recommend you put your car in a lower gear so you don't burn out the brakes.

Chuck did a great job driving the whole way

As you can see, it got darker and darker as we descended.

I didn't get any pictures, but we frequently came across those same cows on the way down that we saw on the way up. If you went too fast, it would be easy to hit them. We could see groups of them laying down alongside the road. Occasionally, one would or two would get really near the road. Because it was so dark, we couldn't see them until we were right upon them so Chuck had to drive very carefully and slowly. Fortunately, cows move slowly -- unlike Michigan deer who dart quickly and are difficult to avoid if they come across the road.

As you can see from following this blog, Thursday, October 8 was a VERY full day. We started with lunch in Lahaina and ended up here after watching the sunset at the top of Haleakala.

We finally got back to sea level and drove back to our condo north of Lahaina. We got home about 8:30 pm that night and then had to pack up to leave :-(
